  • BARLO PLASTICS TO SPONSOR MUMM 30 IN TOUR DE FRANCE A LA VOILE 2000
  • BARLO PLASTICS TO SPONSOR 2 BOATS IN FORD CORK WEEK

Barlo Plastics, Europe's leading independent producer of transparent plastic sheets, today announces their sponsorship of Adrian Stead and his crew aboard the British Mumm 30 in the Tour de France à la Voile 2000.

The Tour de France à la Voile is a one-design yacht race, sailed in Mumm 30's, which takes place every summer along France's three coastlines, the Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Along the route of the Tour, the yachts take part in offshore races, coastal races, Olympic and windward-leeward courses. The Mumm 30 is a world-renowned high performance yacht, known for producing fast and close racing.

The Tour de France à la Voile has become a truly international event with past and present teams entering from France, Great Britain, New Zealand, USA, Belgium, South Africa, Germany and Switzerland. Among its competitors, the Tour will play host to some of the biggest and brightest names in world yachting, including Adrian Stead, Roy Heiner, Bertrand Pacé, Luc Dewulf, Hamish Pepper, Christine Briand and Ed Collins, the current Mumm 30 world champion from America.

The 2000 Tour de France à la Voile will take competitors from North to South, stopping in 16 ports and 3 countries, France, UK, and Italy. Departing from Dieppe, the second port of call for these boats will be Portsmouth in the UK where the boats will contest 2 inshore races before setting off across the Channel to Cherbourg and eventually continuing down the Atlantic coast. This will be home territory for the 7-man crew of the Barlo Plastics yacht, skippered by Adrian Stead, who was the victorious Mumm 36 skipper in last year's Champagne Mumm Admiral's Cup. He will be joined on the boat by helmsman Tim Powell, Stuart Childerley, Gerry Mitchell, James Stagg, Peter Morton, Julian Salter, Guy Salter, Simon Fry, Andy Hemmings and Ian Walker.

Commenting on their involvement as sponsor of the Mumm 30, André de Smet, Managing Director of Barlo Plastics said: "Having taken a keen interest in sailing for many years, I am delighted that Barlo Plastics will this year be sponsoring Adrian Stead and his Mumm 30 crew in the Tour de France à la Voile 2000. This is not our first entry into sailing sponsorship, however this high profile international event links well with the marketing strategy of Barlo Plastics since it merged as a single pan-European operations last year."

Barlo Plastics also announces today its sponsorship of two boats in Ford Cork Week, as well as becoming an official regatta sub sponsor.

Ford Cork Week is one of the world's most popular sailing regattas, and is hosted by the oldest yacht club in the world, The Royal Cork Yacht Club, founded in 1720. The event this year takes place from July 15th to July 21st and promises to be one of the biggest yet.

Harold Cudmore will skipper the first Barlo Plastics sponsored boat in the Class Zero competition at Ford Cork Week. The boat is a one-off prototype designed for Oyster Marine by John Corby. Harold and his team hope to repeat their performance whilst sponsored by Barlo Plastics in the 1998 Ford Cork Week regatta, when they were the overall winner of the Class Zero competition.

Among his team, Harold can count some of the UK's best names in yachting, Olympian Andy Beadsworth, Lou Varney, Guy Barron and Ian Moore.

The second Barlo Plastics sponsored boat "Barlo Plastics 2" will be a Laser 28 skippered by Belgian, Marc Delbaere. This former North Sea Champion hopes to rise to the occasion of this big regatta and win their class. Skipper Marc Delbaere commented, " We are not a professional team but a team of people who always want to learn more and find new goals. Competing in this regatta is a big challenge for us."
