XOD Captains Cup at Skandia Cowes Week - Day 1

by Mark Jardine 3 Aug 2003 09:30 BST

Once again the XOD fleet is the biggest at Skandia Cowes Week with 66 entries and once again the fleet is the last to start. Many boats have been restored of renovated over the winter making 2003 most of the open year’s ever for the Captain’s Cup trophy.

With a long delay due to no wind in the morning the XODs set off at 3.45pm, later than anyone can remember a Cowes Week start being.

As it was the Westerly breeze had filled in nicely and the fleet went away first time with only one boat being called OCS. Best start of the day went to Willie McNeil in ‘Blue on Blue’ who led up the first beat and went on to win the race. The run against the tide saw some interesting tactical decisions with some take the straight line to Spanker while others headed straight for the Lepe shore.

Peter Baines in the newly restored ‘Palassie’ finished second with the Lawrence brothers in ‘Catherine’ third. The fleet this year is particularly strong with Dave Bedford returning to the fleet in ‘Heyday’ finishing sixth. Current Etchells World Champion Stuart Childerly sailing ‘Foxglove’ only managed to finish 27th. Defending Captain’s Cup champion Simon Russell finished 22nd (more points than he accumulated during the entire Cowes Week in 2002).

The heat wave is set to set in further with chances good for a sea breeze to fill in again today.
