Rob Struckett & Peter Fleck, winners of the Itchenor Mirror Open
Rolling Stone Keith Richards is said to be Itchenor’s most famous resident but his wrinkly reputation was threatened on the 15 June by by a plethora of sailing superstars from a bygone era. No less then four former world champions crammed their creaky joints into 10 foot Mirrors in a desperate attempt to recapture their days of glory at Itchenor SC’s Mirror Open meeting. However the true glory belonged to 14 year olds Rob Struckett and Peter Fleck who scored an impressive victory over the record 35 boat fleet.

The day dawned bright and clear but with no wind. An hour’s postponement saw the seabreeze emerge and a course was set off Roman Landing in Chichester Harbour. The early Race 1 leaders were Struckett / Fleck who pulled away to a commanding lead. The race for second place was won by Alice and Jillian Darling ahead of Gareth Evans and Steven Aiken. The Clementson’s from Chipstead were 4th.

Race 2 provided the spectators with a thrilling duel eventually won by Evans / Aiken from Struckett / Fleck. Katie and Lucy Macgregor scored third in front of former Int14 champion Charles Stanley with daughter Olivia crewing.

The final race was won in fine style by Ned McNulty crewed by Tom Hodgkinson from Hillhead. The Chipstead Clementson’s scored second ahead of the Macgregor sisters. This time Fireball champion Vince Horey with son Tom took 4th place. The Evans / Aitken were OCS ending their challenge to Struckett / Fleck who secured the overall win. Other prizewinners were Edward Fitzgerald and Harry Richardson who won the under 13 prize and Roger and Grace Yeoman who won the prize for youngest competitor.
