Hot pink sails heat up Miami

The 29erXX SEIKO Superbowl regatta begins Monday, February 1 in Miami with international teams spanning 4 continents sailing the skiffs on Biscayne Bay.

Olympic sailors Giulia Conti of Italy and Graham Biehl of the US will both be sailing as well as two-time ISAF Youth World medalist Hannah Nattrass of Australia. Several other top sailors will also try their hand this week. 17 year old Julia Paxton, USA who sailed the 29er in the 2008 ISAF Youth Worlds stated “this was the most fun I’ve ever had sailing” after her day on the water. Paxton has been focusing on the 29er, but spent her first full day in the 29erXX.

The 29erXX is a souped-up version of the 29er, or a mini-49er. It has double trapeze giving the skipper the athletic challenge of driving from the wire. It also sports a masthead kite and square-top main giving the boat the speed skiffs are well known for. The 29erXX was narrowly defeated in November 2008 for the women's doublehanded equipment for the 2012 Olympics in London. It has since gained popularity filling the void for women who want to sail high performance boats after the 29er. The 29erXX is an open boat and also serves as a stepping stone into the 49er for men.

Racing begins tomorrow and continues through February 3, hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Follow the regatta through Facebook: search for '29erxx Sailing' or on the www.29er.org website.
