45th Hamble Warming Pan at Hamble River Sailing Club Preview

by Barney Smith / HRSC 14 Mar 2007 15:04 GMT 10-11 March 2007

Over 50 dinghies competed in the 45th annual Hamble Warming Pan hosted by Hamble River Sailing Club over the weekend of 10th & 11th March. The event was blessed with amazing weather normally only seen at the height of an English Summer. With bright sunshine and moderate winds prevailing all weekend the competitors enjoyed four superb races up and down the Hamble River.

The 23 strong Firefly Class was won by Mark Tait and Sally Wakefield from Wessex Exiles in Mark’s superbly restored, 59 year old, Firefly ‘Dido’, originally built for the 1948 Olympic Games. Mark and Sally just edged out Ian Sanderson from the Royal Lymington who sailed with Claire Wood (Saturday) and Debs Hill (Sunday).

The Merlin Class, also comprising 23 boats, was keenly fought with Richard Whitworth and Nichola Brook in “Filthy/Gorgeous” taking the Warming Pan title by a single point from Tom Stewart and Chris Downham. Things might have been different if Tom and Chris hadn’t missed the first race on Saturday due to some significant travel errors.

The local Foxer class was convincingly won by John Duff in “Hale Fox”. Despite having the smallest entry this class had some of the keenest racing and provided excellent entertainment as they used some very small courses set adjacent to Hamble Green.

Once again the many volunteers members of HRSC provided excellent race management, plenty of hot food all day, a friendly welcome and following a very hectic week running up to the event some superb new changing rooms. Over the year the club will consider plans for the 46th Warming Pan which will take place on 8/9 March 2008 but rest assured the event is now back on a firm footing and the club looks forward to welcoming an even bigger entry in 12 months times.
