Garmin Hamble Winter Series 2008 - Preview

by Jonty Sherwill 6 May 2008 16:48 BST 5 October - 30 November 2008

Hamble River Sailing Club, organiser of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series, has today published its 2008 Preview. With continued support from Garmin now in its fourth consecutive year, the 2008 series will run from 5th October until 30th November.

In response to competitor feedback the 2008 main series will feature an additional race each day for all classes when the weather conditions allow, thus two races for Black Group and three races for White Group. It will be announced to competitors on the day if the extra race is to be sailed.

The increasingly popular Hamble Big Boat Series and Autumn Championships are joined by a brand new trial event, the 'Super-Sport' class for larger sports-boats. Designed for boats too big or fast for the existing SBR class the event is aimed to attract a variety of boats that may not fit comfortably into IRC. Entries may include the new md35, Melges 32, Mumm 30, J-92, modified Ultra 30, and other one-off sportsboats.

Boats in the Super-Sport class will be rated using the SBR rule, extended above the usual 10 metre overall length limit in a unique trial arrangement with the RORC rating office. A minimum rating or size limit will be applied provisionally at 8.5 metres overall length with an 11.0 metre upper limit. Trapezes will be allowed. Racing will take place over two weekends alongside the Hamble Big Boat Series.

The Laser SB3 Class is also to get extra racing in 2008, its Autumn Championship that attracted 43 entries in 2007, is extended to 12 races over two weekends.
