Rooster 2000 National Championship at Castle Cove Sailing Club - Day 1

by Chris Jordan 14 Aug 2016 22:34 BST 13-19 August 2016

The Rooster sponsored 2016 National Championships for the 2000 Class kicked off today in Portland Harbour, hosted by Castle Cove Sailing Club. Over 50 boats are entered, the highest turnout for the National Championships for 6 years.

After a strict briefing from Sara Lloyd the Race Officer (Don't forget your tallies. Don't forget your trackers!), we were postponed ashore for 45 minutes to allow the wind to settle in a southerly direction.

The start was very prompt, leaving some boats to struggle back late from where they had been practising near the windward mark, with last years National Champion Fergus Barnham and Serena De Nahik starting from near the committee boat and showing their skills at the front of the fleet. Unlike last year, he didn't manage to extend his lead, as his parents Jasper and Laura Barnham kept him in close sight all race. The wind surprised everyone by staying fairly consistent at about 8-10 knots, allowing Darren Roach / Jeremy Stevens to pull through to 3rd at the finish.

For the start of the second race, the wind had veered back to the south east, and Darren Roach / Jeremy Stevens broke clear from the near the port end of the line. But this time it was the Barnham parents who grabbed first place around the first mark, and then pulled out a 200 yard lead by the leeward mark, as the rest of the fleet disappeared into a big no-wind hole. When the wind came back from the south west, the Race Officer sensibly abandoned that race and re-set the course and line.

A number of the top boats started near the committee boat, expecting the wind to continue veering. But it was Tim and Linda Hulley who read the beat correctly, coming in from the left hand side of the beat well clear of the rest of the fleet. The wind in this race was very patchy, ranging from 0-1 knots at times on the run, to an 8 knot sea-breeze at other points on the course. This made for some very frustrating racing in the middle of the fleet, but Jasper / Laura Barnham showed how to master the conditions with a race win, followed by Simon Horsfield / Tom Beernal from the Army Sailing Association, with Tim / Linda holding on to 3rd place.

The racing continues in and just outside Portland Harbour all week, with a lay-day on Wednesday to visit Weymouth Carnival. The Rooster sponsored event can be watched online, using the SailRacer trackers in every boat.
