2000 class Nationals at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club - Day 5

by Chris Jordan 13 Aug 2015 20:21 BST 9–15 August 2015

The wind forecast for the 5th day of the LDC and Noble Marine sponsored 2000 National Championships at Abersoch varied between dropping from 10 knots to 2, or dropping from 15 to 10.

We hoped for the second, but the first turned out to be more accurate! But before it dropped the fleet did manage to squeeze in 3 races of very close (and often frustrating) racing with some very tight buoy roundings and finish lines.

The Race Officer (Malcolm Blackburn) set a perfect beat and a very slightly pin-end biased line. He also tried his best to start on time - but the fleet was too eager and needed a general recall and then the black flag before they behaved.

Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik once again nailed the pin end, sailed up the left hand side of the beat (less adverse tide proving better than slightly more wind on the right) to lead all the way around. Rachel Grayson & Katie Burridge worked up from 12th around the first mark to take 2nd place with Natalie Roach & Alex Pickles just taking 3rd place ahead of Tim & Linda Hulley.

The wind for the first race remained very steady at 8 knots from the East. For the second there was a small increase to 10 knots, and once again Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik took the left hand side of the beat and the right hand side of the run to narrowly lead all the way round, taking their 6th bullet from Rob & Sarah Burridge.

Roger Mcall & Jazz Sayed found some tremendous speed in this race, taking 3rd place (and continued their speed into the last race of the day to take 5th).

The start of the third race was once again delayed by an eager fleet, and the black flag was needed. And this time a number of the top sailors got caught out: Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik and Natalie Roach & Alex Pickles sailed back to the beach, while Tim & Linda Hulley stayed out, hoping for the best!

Simon Horsefield & Tom Bernal took the right hand side of the beat to allow them to take a good lead into the first mark. Rob & Sarah Burridge spent all race making the gap smaller! As the wind dropped from 10 to 8 to 5 to 3 knots, the Race Officer very sensibly shortened at the end of the second windward leg - just soon enough for Simon & Tom to remain in the lead by about a boat length. Ali & Graham Barker finished a good day with a 3rd place.

With a wind forecast back into the 20 knot range for the last day, things are looking very good for Fergus Barnham & Serena de Nahlik, but behind them things are very close: 2nd and 3rd are split by a single point, and 4th to 6th only have 2 points between them.
