There was no racing today at the 2000 National Championships at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club. A 2 hour postponement, while the wind swung from South to West and built to 5 or 6 knots, was followed by the fleet being released - and the wind turned off!
After 2 hours of drifting, the wind started to fill in from the North West forecasted direction at around 6 to 7 knots. The course was laid, the start line was laid, and the race officer had the 5-minute flag in his hand ready to be hoisted - only to notice that the boats around him had all stopped moving!
Another hour of waiting for the wind to re-appear, until finally we were all sent ashore after 4 hours on the water. We sailed back easily in a reasonable 8 knots! But from directions that varied through 40 to 50 degrees.
Just the day when you do NOT want to be a Race Officer.
