GJW Direct 2024 Dinghy

GJW Direct Lark Nationals at Penzance Sailing Club - Day 1

by Charlie Roome 17 Aug 2014 23:08 BST 16-22 August 2014

Day 1 of the 2014 National Champs dawned with talk of a strong breeze. The fleet launched for a series of practice starts, the first of which ended with a monster gust and a rather too large dose of rain!

Race 1 got away with the esteemed class chairman James Ward playing pathfinder, and the fleet set off around a trapezoid course with the Hydons, Hall/Dart, the Wards, Hufton/Kennedy and the Whites leading the way. However the Cornish breeze had other ideas and a 30 degree right shift left the beat a fetch. The race was abandoned and the race committee duly set about resetting the course whilst the fleet made time for their 3 course lunch.

The restart of race 1 saw the Hydons extend away from the fleet to take the bullet, with second going to Senior/Booth and third to the Wards.

Race 2 started in a sunnier spell but with the fleet still enjoying full hiking conditions. Roome/Stephens led at the first mark and got away down the first reach, with the Hydons in hot pursuit. Roome/Stephens held on to win from the Hydons and the Whites.

Overnight the Hydons lead from Roome/Stephens with a pack of boats stacked up close behind. Sleepy heads are now preparing for beach games and BBQ at the club.
