2014 Marina Regatta Series unveiled for England's longest lake

by Heather Sewell 1 Feb 2014 12:00 GMT 1 February 2014

One of the country's most iconic lakes will again play host to the increasingly popular Windermere Marina Village Sailing Regatta Series. The dates have just been confirmed for this year's racing calendar on England's longest lake, with the competition getting underway on Saturday 26 April 2014.

As well as being open to members of Windermere Cruising Association, anyone with a yacht moored at one of the largest inland marinas in Northern England - Windermere Marina Village - is eligible to take part. With a full variety of vessels between 20ft and 40ft long taking to the water, the events are expected to attract around 25 sailing boats.

The full 2014 dates for Windermere Sailing Regatta Series are:

  • Sat 26 April
  • Sat 24 May
  • Sat 21 June
  • Sat 5 July
  • Sat 23 August
  • Sat 27 September
The events will build on the success of the 2013 Regatta Series, which saw the crew of Diamond Edge take the overall win at the end of September in glorious sunshine.

Members of the public can enjoy the 2014 action from various points around Windermere's shoreline. The sailing will get underway just south of the Marina or just north of Bowness-on-Windermere, depending on the weather conditions.

Dan Fairweather, Marina Manager, says, "The enthusiasm for the Sailing Regattas on Windermere is continuing to grow and we're looking forward to this year's events firing up some more healthy competition in some of the country's most outstanding natural surroundings. The regatta series is a great introduction to racing. The WCA do a fantastic job of ensuring all are welcome, whether you're a seasoned competitor or venturing out for the first time. It can be a spectacular site from the lake shore or neighbouring fells that can be enjoyed by anyone in the area.

Tim Jones, Commodore of the Windermere Cruising Association says, "Windermere Cruising Association are delighted to partner again with WMV for the 2014 Marina Regatta Series as part of our extensive racing and social calendar. Last year was a huge success and we saw both new and experienced yacht owners come out to test the waters in the 6 Marina races. The Regatta Series is a fantastic way to improve your sailing, meet new people and expand your sailing experience. For those who have never raced before you will discover a competitive yet supportive club of like-minded sailors. We look forward to welcoming back members and meeting new crews in 2014."

With the iconic Langdale Pikes to the north and picturesque rolling hills and countryside to the south, Windermere Marina Village is centrally located near Bowness on a quiet inlet just off the main lake. The Marina has 400 moorings which provide a safe and secure environment for sailing boats and motor cruisers all year-round. It is also home to a wide selection of four-star holiday cottages and apartments, as well as 13 newly opened luxury waterside penthouses which can accommodation between 2 and 10 people.
