Activate Your Laser Fleet continues in 2011

by Katie Ashworth, LaserPerformance 18 Mar 2011 13:46 GMT

The first Activate Your Laser Fleet workshop has already taken place in 2011. Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club in Lancashire hosted Activators from Bolton Sailing Club, Redesmere Sailing Club, Nantwich & Border Counties Sailing Club and Jumbles Sailing Club in February.

Brett Cokayne, Activate Your Laser Fleet Co-ordinator, organised the event and spent time with the Activators discussing different ways of getting Laser fleets out of the dinghy park and back on the water. All Clubs face different challenges and barriers to participation, but the Activate Your Laser Fleet project identifies ways of combating these issues with the ultimate goal of more adults sailing, more often.

Following a morning of discussion and debate, advice and suggestions the Activators took to the water at Leigh and Lowton, in six brand new Lasers provided by LaserPerformance. Different coaching techniques and ideas were shared with the Activators, not only with the aim of improving their own sailing, but providing them with ideas to take home to their own clubs.

Trimpley Sailing Club took part in the first round of Activate Your Laser Fleet workshops in 2010 and have hosted two follow up Activate Your Laser Fleet days since. The follow up days have been well attended by a mixture of sailors; young, old, new and returning Laser sailors. The Commodore of Trimpley Sailing Club’s daughter, Alice Webb, decided to join the Laser 4.7 fleet after attending the event. A boat was found in an overgrown area of the dinghy park that had not been touched for over 6 years! With some effort from her father, Ralph Webb, and the support of LaserPerformance and Father Christmas, Alice’s Laser has been restored to its former glory. Congratulations Alice and Trimpley Sailing Club, another Laser Activated!

Further Activate Your Laser Fleet Workshops have been confirmed at the following venues:
