Sailing clubs across the country will be busy dusting off their boat covers this year, as the Activate Your Laser Fleet scheme continues to encourage even more sailors to get back out on the water and sailing regularly.

The initiative has grown significantly since its launch in 2010 with sailors from over 70 sailing clubs coming together for workshops with the aim of getting as many Lasers ‘activated’ as possible.

“With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Weymouth and Portland this year, we truly believe that there has never been a better time to enthuse Laser sailors” explains Activate Your Laser Fleet Project Coordinator Brett Cokayne.

“We are delighted that the Activate Your Laser Fleet will continue in 2012 and hope that even more clubs will sign up, hold workshops and get back out on the water” Brett continues.

Activate Workshops consist of discussions and debates on how on how to enthuse and inspire the Laser sailors in their fleet. ‘Activators’ also have the opportunity to get on the water in brand new boats as well as sharing handy coaching tips and techniques.

At the end of the sessions, ‘activators’ are advised to create a plan of action. This could be a series of weekly fleet racing or simply a day to share tips on how to refurbish unused dinghies.

One sailing club who will be busy ‘activating’ their Laser Fleet this year are Dorchester Sailing Club who held a workshop back in November.

Club Commodore Patrick Fleming said: “Activate your Laser Fleet has been a fantastic way to bring excitement and enthusiasm and ideas back into our fleet. This year we will aim for a fleet of 30 sailors and make sure we have hire boats available for non-Laser sailors. We also want to encourage even more novice racers to take part and increase youth participation by acquiring radial and 4.7 rigs for the club”.

If you would like to find out more about the programme or sign up for a workshop email Brett Cokayne or visit www.activateyourlaserfleet.co.uk
