Commodores Cup weekend at Chase Sailing Club

Chase SC is without water but the club is still thriving and last weekend was the first ever Commodores Cup weekend. Dovey Yacht Club kindly agreed to hold the event for us at short notice, so huge thanks must go them for all their hard work and effort.

Sailors were greeted on saturday to sunshine and a nice force 4. After a clean start it became apparent that local knowledge would have a huge effect on the days racing with Sam Pickering taking a commanding lead at the first mark, followed by Paul Lester then Josh Hyland.

Paul Lester managed to catch up and pass Sam Pickering during the race to take the flag but Sam Pickering sailed a great race to finish ahead on handicap with Paul Lester second Josh Hyland third and Ben Pickering in fourth.

Race two after lunch started cleanly with Sam Pickering showing the rest of the fleet the way round with excellent use of the tide to win by a large margin followed by Josh Hyland and congratulation to Ben Pickering taking a deserved 3rd place.

Race three started with the tide now going out. This meant with wind against tide a swell was created to test the fleet. Sam Pickering again led at the first mark closely followed by Paul Lester and Josh and Eden Hyland. After Paul Lester recovered from a capsize he managed to make better use of the now freshening wind to pass Sam Pickering to take the win followed by Sam in second and Eden Hyland in third.

Sunday morning greeted us with a very fresh force 6-7 with rain. The OOD and sailors decided to wait for the forecast drop in wind at lunch time. A smaller fleet went afloat at 1.00pm and after the a clean start a battle against the elements started. Sam Pickering led at the first mark with Paul Lester close behind. Sam again used better local knowledge to find the best way through the tide to gain a large lead. Paul was left to fight it out with Josh for second place unfortunately on the last lap Paul's tiller extension broke and he retired leaving Josh to take second and Eden in third.

All sailors agreed that it was a great event and we will be back next year!
