if u were to accidently leave it in would it be deemed to be cheating as it would reduce the wetted surface area of the boat!!!!

This is a true story. Really, it is.  Ask Dr C, he knows the perpetrator too.

Once upon a time, back in the days when people weren't allowed to take surf boards on planes, a very keen surfer was going on holiday to the Canaries.  And he wanted to take a surfboard with him.  So he cuts an old board in two and tries to put it in his suitcase.  It doesn't fit.  So he cuts it into four.  And manages to fit it into his suitcase. Along with quite a lot of epoxy.  He gets to his hotel  and decides to have a drink before epoxying the board back together.  He's talking to the barman and surfing comes up in conversation.  "You surf then?" says the barman, "I've got a spare board you can borrow..."

Is it any wonder he sails a Hurricane now?

A couple of years ago we managed to puncture both trailer wheels and were only carrying one spare -----so... we put the trailer on the roof bars and put the topper which had been on the roof bars into the car - It was a people carrier but it was a bit squashed with 4 kids and a topper and me inside - Probably not very safe but time and the ferry weren;t going to wait!

Another suggestion would be to melt the Topper in a pot into one big chunk of plastic, and then re-mould it in your roof box at the destination.
