49er Open Meeting at Lee-on-the-Solent Sailing Club

by Dave Hall 15 May 2002 12:19 BST

If you had looked along the beach before the start on Saturday morning you would have been forgiven for thinking that Lee was host to some international regatta! With competitors from five Nations it was quite an international affair. Just like the other fleets Saturday was a desperate battle of wits and nerve. The fickle wind having a fight between to sea breeze and North westerly gradient air brought much frustration. Ad the tide and results on Saturday were very mixed - apart from Ben McGraine and James Perry. Fresh from the 29er class the won both races with only the local team of Malcolm Jaques and Roger Coles getting anywhere near them.

Sunday brought some real sailing conditions, sunshine and 12 - 15 knots. Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith showed the fleet why they are one of the top 49er teams in the world by winning all but one of the races. 470 gold medalists Mark Turnball and Nick Partridge from Australia won the other race and kept a string of low point scores to give them second overall. Veterans Jaques and Coles kept there heads cool and held on to 3rd. Spare a thought for McGraine and Perry who were looking good until half way through Sunday broke their trapeze wires and had to count a DNF.

Grabbing chances with both hands
Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK. February saw record rainfall (yes, I know we're famed for our rain over here), it's been seriously windy and generally chilly. Posted on 30 Apr
