Pre-season Laser 5000 Training – Wet and Windy
Saturday 10th March saw the first of the two pre-season training sessions held at what remains of Hayling Island Sailing Club. (It is about to be demolished prior to construction of a new one). There were 8 boats rigged and ready for the 11 o’clock briefing session. What was encouraging was the number of new crews preparing for the current season. The training was taken by former Laser5000 legend Rob Wells with support from current national champion, Andy Richards.
The day commenced with a short briefing session before the boats hit the water around a short windward/ leeward course, working on the tacks and gybes. Conditions were challenging, for what was for some, a first time in the boat and capsize practise also found its way into the agenda for most of the crews. The breeze however, continued to build (25knots) and eventually the boats were ordered off the water.
The debrief followed lunch with loads of advice and little tips on various manoeuvres that make all the difference in these boats. Key issues raised though were the importance of communication between helm and crew and need to have procedures in place for all the sail handling and boat manoeuvres through the wind range.
The fleet then ventured onto the water to practise the theory but the ensuing squall and the ebbing tide meant that a number of boats found the sandbanks and practise had to be postponed to Sunday and the fourth round of the Hayling Island Asymetric Series.
Off the water there was the annual Laser 5000 “Bring and Buy Sale”. A good opportunity to pass on surplus kit and pick up some spares for the coming season. Business was good and satisfied buyers and sellers then adjourned to the bar.
Special thanks to Hayling Island Sailing Club for hosting the event, Rob Wells and Andy Richards for the excellent coaching and Roger Lewis for organising the day.
The next Laser 5000 training takes place on the weekend the 24/25th of March, at the same venue. Training is on both Saturday and Sunday and is an invaluable opportunity for all crews to get advice and tips from the best in the business as well as that all important time-on-the-water. See you there.
