It was all to play for in the final race of Saltash sailing clubs duchy timber spring series with each class still undecided. The IRC class was the closest with six boats all with a good chance of taking the series victory. Racing returned to Plymouth Sound and the southeasterly wind would build throughout the race.
John Dyer’s Exocet Strike was soon in trouble a steering failure in the pre start causing them to be late starting. At the start it was Frank Ellwood on Lingo who showed everybody the way, a perfectly executed pin end start put them straight in to the lead. Neville Davenport followed on Musk Ox coming in on the second row and was the first to tack away to pass lingo and lead the fleet at the windward mark. Lingo rounded in second and was soon fighting to hold off David Oliver’s Xtorion8. Musk Ox came home for line honours and the corrected time victory by 33
seconds. Second place went to Lingo which was enough to win the series overall. John Lillie on Judicious was third two minutes ahead of Xtorsion8 with Mike Anning on Revihan rounding off the top five.
The PY class was a straight battle between Dave Hearn’s Sea Bee and Terry Curtis on Private Life. It was Private Life who showed the way but Line honours were not enough to stop Sea Bee from taking the win by just over a minute. Dave Moore’s Rough Diamond was once again the best of the rest third place rounding off a consistent performance and the race result was echoed in the overall results. Despite only managing a sixth Simon Keable on West End Girl finished in fourth
overall ahead of Tony Woodhouse’s Flasher.
Angus Mcphie on Wave Warrior won the last race of the J80 class giving them an overall win by 4 points from Daryl Conyers on Oceans Eleven. Peter Wanstall on Jem experienced some problems with their spinnaker but two eighth places was enough to hold on to third by just a single point. In fourth having to count a DNC in their results after missing the first weekend Steve Hills on
JSM was a consistent performer rarely outside the top three. One point behind JSM was Steve Northmore on Quckeye who rounded off his series with a couple of second places.
