Laser Open at Bury Lake Young Mariners

Fourteen year-old Duncan Jenkins from Aldenham SC annihilated the opposition in his bid to retain the overall trophy at Bury Lake Young Mariners’ laser open meeting on Sunday, March 6th.

Under grey skies and in a chilling and shifty northerly breeze of 6-10 knots, Duncan cruised round in front of the fleet for the first two races; and only a cavalier attempt at a port flier in the third and final race caused him to eventually be buried in the pack for the first few laps, before he once again broke free to finish the event in style.

Behind him the boats of local heroes Paul Knight and Steve Swinchatt seemed drawn together by an irresistible magnetism, and a titanic dogfight ensued between them throughout the day, Paul being the eventual victor by a single point. However sixteen year-old Sam Flint from Fishers Green was able to take advantage of this match-racing and quietly sail her radial into second place overall.

Mentions must also go to Dan Collette, whose steadily improving results saw him finishing a close fifth; and Martin Clemance, who for the second year running made the long journey from Poole to compete in the event.
