Leaders at Hickling Broad Sailing Club

by Jane Wharmby 20 May 2003 21:43 BST
'Screaming reaches' were the order of the day for the first Leader Open event of 2003 which took place at Hickling Broad on 17-18 May.

Force 4 - 5 winds (with the occasional Force 6 gust)made for some unforgettable planing reaches across the length of the Broad. A fantastic experience! Thank you to all at Hickling Broad SC for a very warm welcome and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

Saturday's racing took the form of passage races to Potter Heigham and back - with the, now traditional, pit stop in the pub for lunch. The outward leg was won by Chris Wharmby (not one to be late for a pint)and the return journey by Mike and Tom Sherwen.

Sunday's racing was dominated by the home team, John Parker and Jane Pye, who had tuned their boat overnight and took line honours in each of the races.

New-comers to the fleet, the Morris family, gave the 'old-hands'something to think about, finishing the final race in fourth place and frequently vying for position with fellow Melton Mowbray members, Paul and Helen Dickinson, as well as the furthest travelled visitor, Jason Jackson and crew, Gary.

Overall Results:
1st John Parker and Jane Pye, Hickling Broad
2nd Chris and Jane Wharmby, Milton Keynes SC
3rd Mike, Tom and Val Sherwen, Deben YC
4th Paul and Helen Dickinson, Melton Mowbray SC
5th Richard, Christine, Robert and Sally Morris, Melton Mowbray SC
6th Jason Jackson and Gary, Bath
