405 Spring Championships at Northampton Sailing Club

by Fiona Reid and Leanne Hibberd 27 Apr 2003 23:02 BST

25-27 April

10 boats turned up on Friday 25th April at Northampton Sailing Club for the 405 Spring Championships.

In light wind conditions Dylan Fletcher and Nick Hollis took 3 first places out of Friday’s four races. Johnny Backhouse the 2001 2nd 405 national helm returned with Becki High as crew and they were in close competition with Dylan and Nick. Will Tremlow and Andy Bath also sailed strongly and were in 3rd place at the end of Friday.

An 11th 405 arrived on Saturday as well as 8 29ers and 14 Musto skiffs. The morning wind conditions remained light but as the wind strengthened in the afternoon Holly and Sophie Tuckwood gained a first and second place. Fiona Reid and Leanne Hibberd gained a first place in the 2nd race of the morning and were battling for the front positions during the afternoon. Tom Foskett and Tim Neecham and Ollie Wilce and Matt Hollis both gained 2nd places during the Saturday racing.

Sunday saw the wind increase to a force 5-6 with some major gusts leaving much of the racing fleets on their sides at times. Some crews found the conditions too testing leaving only 7 405s completing the races on Sunday. Dylan and Nick took a 3rd and 1st in the morning. In the afternoon the wind increased again as Dylan and Nick got 2 more 1st's. Greg Hall and Peter Wathin coped well with the conditions achieving an impressive 2nd place in the last race.
