Fireball US Midwinters at Davis Island Yacht Club, Florida

by Phil Locker 12 Mar 2003 17:46 GMT

March 7,8,9

Now in its 38th consecutive year at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa Florida.

We had a light air day on Saturday sandwiched by two days that built to 20 knots or so with lumpy water. In short, great racing, with something for everyone! Pat and Ned were pretty much untouchable no matter what the conditions were, and Gary and Mark were usually secure in second place. After that the results were mixed up a bit, with everyone having someone to race with. The heavy air days, combined with 1 mile beats, proved a bit much for some teams, but everybody went out and at least tried.

In the local tradition, the newest boat in the fleet somehow found its way into the club swimming pool. This year the victom was US14819 of Duncan Schaefer. Built by one of the high school Fireball building teams, this is one good looking, and fast, fireball.

Embossed towels went to 1st through 3rd places, and to the top junior team (Schaefer/Lunk), the Masters (Mark Miller, sailing with local Ethington), and to DFL (Barbetta/Schwartz).

Thanks to race officer Paul Leonard and DIYC for hosting another great event.
