Ford Cork Week 2000 is to host the 1720 European Championships next July, with a fleet of 80+ vessels expected to participate.
This is the second time that the 1720 fleet has chosen Ford Cork Week as the venue for this competition. The event itself is among the foremost in Europe, and is sure to bring even more excitement to Ford Cork Week 2000, which runs from July 15th to July 21st of this year.
Ford Cork Week has proven to be a very popular venue for the 1720 class, primarily because of its excellent mixture of good racing afloat, and great fun ashore. Add to this the facts that this will be the largest 1720 event this year; the first of the new millennium; and that it takes place in the birthplace of this flourishing class, and it becomes clear why Ford Cork Week 2000 organisers are pulling out all the stops for the 80+ boats.
During this Ford Cork Week, some of the big names of One Design sailing will compete in the competition. Mark Rushall, Laser 5000 supremo and current British 1720 Champion, and Steve Goacher, Sonata class expert and past Flying Fifteen World Champion are following in the footsteps of the likes of Ben Ainsle, as they try and challenge the stranglehold Irish sailors have on the 1720 European Championship. It is hoped that Mark Mansfield will take time out from his Star Olympic campaign to defend his title, while RCYC Admiral Anthony O'Leary will be trying to improve on the runners-up spot he has claimed in the competition for the last two years.
Ford Cork Week 2000 organisers have introduced some innovations for the class (which began in Crosshaven in 1994, and is named for the year in which the RCYC was founded) including the provision of a full International Jury, with the possibility of on the water observers. Class Executive Secretary Ron Hutchison is looking forward to "an action packed week, with superb racing for this exciting class."
