Volvo visitors day at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club

by Ralph Singleton 23 Oct 2002 11:28 BST

West country based Clifton Motor Company very kindly sponsored a days handicap racing at Chew Valley Lake culminating in a pursuit race for the Chew Rose Bowl.

The slow handicap turned out to be three way tussle between Alistair Tate in a Laser , Colin and Tasha Evans in a N12 and CVLSC Vice Commodore John Smalley in a Solo. The faster boats failed to pull away from Smalley who pulled rank and won with Evans finishing second and Tate third. In the fast handicap fleet the RS 200 sailed by Ralph and Sophie Singleton lead round the first windward mark. Meanwhile Chris Howarth and Stuart Aston sailing an RS800 and Ian Cadwallader and Nick Stone sailing a Flying Fifteen made steady progress through the fleet with Howarth eventually winning from Cadwallader and Singleton.

Despite the continuous rain George Simpkins and his race team braved the elements to get the pursuit race away with the wind continuing to increase in strength. With about 30 mins to go Cadwallader and Stone took the lead from the Singletons . With the wind increasing it was not long before the faster boats approached the front including the RS800 of Howarth and Aston INT 14 of Dom Bowns and Gretel, RS 700 sailed by Tony Freer and Fireball sailed by Colin and Derek Jarvis. In the end Howarth and Aston won comfortly from Cadwallader and Stone who sailed exceptionally well to hold on second from Bowns and Gretel third.
