Lloyd Fryer Memorial Race at Portishead Yacht & Sailing Club

by Derian Chandler 15 Oct 2002 19:45 BST

13/10/02

This annual event was originally billed as a pursuit race. However the severe weather forecast resulted in the race being run as a general handicap, with several crews choosing to observe, rather than participate in the race. The race started in F4 northeasterly, increasing to F5 gusting F6. These were conditions that Lloyd would have relished!

Martin Brooks and Claire Wright (Thorney Island) got a clean start in their Laser 2, with the Fireball of Derian Chandler and Ian Cadwallader (Chew Valley) ducking to get clear air, just behind. Initially, the lead was held on the water by the Boss sailed by Martin Sulley & Barry Smith (Thornbury), but the increasing wind and waves caused them and much of the rest of the fleet to capsize. Chandler and Cadwallader pulled clear leaving the Fireballs of Colin and Derek Jarvis and Jo and Jack Line (Portishead) battling for 2nd place on the water.

Credit must be given to Portishead’s excellent race management and rescue cover. All entry fees were donated to this year's nominated charity, the Spencer Dayman Meningitis Laboratories.
