Laser EPS Open Meeting at Llangorse Sailing Club

by Robert Dangerfield 11 Oct 2002 16:04 BST

5/6 October 2002

A healthy core of 10 EPS's travelled from as far as Glasgow, Plymouth, West Sussex and the Wirral to Llangorse’ inaugural EPS event making a firm foundation to build a regular event.

Against seasonal form, the weekend offered desperately fickle, light northerlies and easterlies. All competitors could be seen crouched – all knees and elbows – well-forward at the base of the mast. The conditions offered no real planing opportunities, but the winged and sleek EPS compared very favourably in upwind performance to the Supernova fleet competing alongside.

Steve Mitchell, 174 found the best of the air in races 1 and 2 on Saturday afternoon, chased by the best of the home brood, David Morgan, 139, and Robert Dangerfield, 303.

The wind diminished to the minimum on Sunday, and Race Officer Nick Taylor did extremely well to deliver the full race programme. Visitors Robert Signer, 106 and John Codner, 127 both found the winning groove – the latter picking-up some extraordinary lifting zephyrs.

Two boats competed in the fleet for the “B-rig” honours – both deserving mention for keeping on-terms with the larger riggers. Martyn Gardiner, local Radial and Moth sailor picked the correct side of the beat in race 5 and was lifted well towards the leading pair.

A great initial success, Llangorse would be delighted for this to have been a prototype “Welsh National Championships 2003.”
