28/29th Sept 2002

Concluding Round of the Scottish and North England Caledonia Ring - Laser 2000 Traveller Series

The inaugural Laser 2000 Scottish National Championships were decided on the first day’s sailing in F1-3 as millpond conditions prevented any racing on the Sunday.

14 boats from all over Scotland participated, which was nearly 50% of the total Scottish fleet. The first race on Saturday produced much sweating on the committee boat as the entire fleet crossed the start line within 2-3 seconds of the gun, with Robert McCulloch and Alma Cadzow (LVSC) leading the beat closely followed by Jim and Margaret Galloway (LVSC). The long 3 lap Windward mark - Leeward gate course soon stretched the field, and at the finish Robert won by a few boat lengths, with Hunter and Margaret Jamieson (LVSC) in third.

The second race found the same leaders pulling away with Roy Mclean and Iain Sierman (SLSC) pushing into third following a close race with Paul Hignet and Mat Watson (LVSC).

The third race was held in falling winds as the lead changed several times as first Robert McCulloch and then Ann Bramley and Julie Leece (LVSC) led the search for puffs of wind, but line honours went to Rorya Marsden and Zoe Richmond from Galloway Sailing Centre. The Alba Cup was awarded to Robert McCulloch and Alma Cadzow(LVSC)on count back with Jim and Margaret Galloway second.

Highest Placed Youth sailor Cheryl Stobbart and Ruary Williamson (Dalgety Bay SC), Highest Placed Parent and child – Patrick and Findlay Quirk (LLSC) and Best Newcomer David Nichol and John Housego (LVSC).

The weekend was also the concluding round on the Laser 2000 Caledonia Ring Travellers, in all 18 boats from 8 sailing clubs had completed at 7 venues in Scotland and North of England, the eventual winner was Jim and Margaret Galloway (LVSC) , 2nd R McLean and Iain Sierman (SLSC), 3rd Ian and Gordon Young (LVSC).

All prizes and Trophies for the above events were kindly donated and presented by Sandy McPhail from Laser Scotland.
