J/24 Europeans at the Royal Irish Yacht Club Overall

The final day of the Alfa Romeo J/24 European Championships saw strong winds sweep across Dublin Bay with some vicious squalls. Two races were scheduled and started at the first attempt. Overall leader Albert Kooijman and his Dutch team on ‘Just for Fun’ had a comfortable lead going into the last two races, but the battle for 2nd and 3rd was far closer with only 4 points separating the third positioned boat from sixth.

Most boats decided to use their jibs in the strong winds at the start, but in the lulls the conditions were marginal and those with genoas gained. Leif Tom Loose and his German team on ‘Rotoman’ reveled in the conditions posting a 1st and a 3rd on the day moving them up to second overall. ‘Just for Fun’ did enough in the first race of the day to win the Championships with a race to spare. It was not a good day for the Italian team on ‘J di F’ when they tore their kite in the second race, pushing them from 2nd to 3rd overall.

British teams took the next four spots with David Ellis’ ‘Hitch-hiker’ just holding off the Jardine’s in ‘Stouche’ and Mark Penford’s ‘Wijit’ dropping to sixth due a torn kite in the first race of the day which forced them to sail with the genoa goose-winged on the downwind legs for the final race.

Top Irish boat were Barry O’Neill and his team on ‘Jazz’ who came in 8th.

Overall Results: (9 races, 1 discard)
