MOCRA Multihull Championships at Falmouth Overall

by Simon Forbes 19 Aug 2002 12:39 BST

The MOCRA Multihull Nationals were held 11-16 August and organised by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association as part of Falmouth Week. Twenty four multihulls entered included 18 trimarans: six Dragonfly 800s, four Corsair Farrier F27s, three F 28s, an F24, a Farrier 9AX and a Daztri 33. The catamarans comprised four Firebirds and the 40 footers Dazcat 12 and TRT1200.

The championship comprised nine races. Local sailor Mike Webb soon showed his intent with a line honours and corrected time victory in race 1 sailing the 26ft Firebird Crackerjack. Still sporting her original 1988 mainsail Crackerjack was setting a new Calvert Sails jib and a new Randy Smyth spinnaker and was crewed by Ian Furniss and Helen Robson. Crackerjack went on to dominate the series with corrected time victory in seven races.

Corsair F28R Electra (Mike Tebbutt) won on corrected time the other two races. The top places were dominated by the higher rated boats with the Firebird of Reg and Rob White taking three seconds and the Corsair Farrier F28s Carbon Tiger(Brian Haynes), and Shakatak (Pete Jenkins) fairing well. Top Dragonfly 800 was Kokomo (James Stewart) with two 2nd places, followed by Scooby III (Simon Forbes).

Fairing well on the water was a new 40ft catamaran, this TRT 1200 from Norway and built in Bulgaria is owned by Martin Bosher, at times she was seen ahead of Reg White's Firebird.
