Enterprise Nationals at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 1

by Bob Southworth 29 Jul 2002 13:59 BST

Saturday was the practice race for this annual National event, unfortunately only 22 boats participated, many weary helm and crews spend more time studying the M5 in a ‘no wind’ situation. The practice race was won by 23038 Shervar Arshad/Riaz Muhammad, a good start for our Pakistani visitors. Second was 22810 Jon Woodward/Richard Adams and third 22439 Phil Bevan/Catrina Bevan.

Sunday, the day of the first race was more appropriate for enjoying the beach, weather was hot but there was a wind, but conditions were fluky, and benefited Jon in the second race; he found wind to the first mark and up the next leg. Fellow competitors were not so fortunate, making Jon the leading boat throughout the race and allowing him to take first place in the second race – he will be hoping for a few more wind shifts to come in his favour during the week.

23039 Richard Estaugh/Pete Rowley comfortably won the first race and came second in the second race. Richard and Pete were the Enterprise World Champions in Goa April 2002. Shervar and Riaz continued their good form after the practice race by recording a sixth and a third in the first two races leaving them overall second after the first day. A good start to the Enterprise National Championships.
