Scorpion Nationals at Castle Cove Sailing Club - Day 2

by Simon Holden 29 Jul 2002 09:53 BST

The racing finally got underway in earnest on the second day of the Scorpion Nationals hosted by Castle Cove Sailing Club in conjunction with the Yacht Clubs of Weymouth. The competitors were greeted with a placid Portland Harbour leading to the inevitable postponement.

The racing started at 12:30 after a south westerly breeze settled. Principal Race Officer Chris Evans opted to set a course inside Portland Harbour rather than make the fleet make the long journey out into Weymouth Bay. The wind settled to a steady 8 – 13 knots only shifting through 20 degrees to the south towards the end of the race.

The race was held over a large old Olympic style course, with a spreader mark placed near the windward mark to prevent boats turning onto the run into the course of other beating boats. The racing during the first beat was very close and it was only on the first reach that 2002 champion John Mursell and Andy Barker (1936) managed to establish a good lead. They were closely pursued by Dave Woodhead and Jerry Hannabuss (1947) and Dave and Mike Hannan (1930). At the windward mark on the second lap Mursell had built a commanding lead when he made an uncharacteristic mistake, turning directly onto the run missing out the spreader mark. He was followed by Woodhead and the Hannans. Noticing Tom Jeffcoate and Barry Rawlins (1964) lead the remainder of the fleet correctly around the marks these three boats turned back. Mursell’s lead had been so great that the time lost beating back to windward meant that at the end of the race he could only manage ninth place.

The pace for the remainder of the race was then set by Jeffcoate and Rawlins closely pursued by Roger and Claire Wood (1961). The Woods managed to pass Jeffcoate on the third beat and hold the lead to the line. Jeffcoate and Rawlins finished second with Carol and John Haines third. An intense battle between Woodhead and the Hannans for fourth place was so close that the race committee could not separate the boats on the line.

This first points race decides the pairing for the ‘Pro-Am’ two boat competition which is being run for the fifth year. The aim of the competition is to encourage those at the front of the fleet to help those further back improve their performance. Full details of this and the other special competitions within the Nationals regatta can be found on the Scorpion Website at www.sailscorpion.co.uk.

Day 2 of the Nationals regatta and the barbecue that evening were generously sponsored by CSM Electronics.
