Yngling Worlds at Lake Lucerne, Switzerland Overall

by Royal Yachting Association 26 Jul 2002 20:25 BST

Team GBR show potential on last day of Yngling Worlds

Today was the final day of racing at the Yngling World Championships, on Lake Lucerne, Brunnen, Switzerland. It has been a tricky regatta for the 46 competitors in the women’s fleet; out of the five days of the event, two days have not been sailable due to lack of breeze.

Two races were sailed today in very light and shifty conditions, ranging from 0-5 knots of wind speed and seeing 25-35 degree wind shifts on the course. Despite this, RYA team GBR had their best day of the regatta. In the first race of the day it was Britain two and three, as they played the shifts to their advantage. Olympic champion Shirley Robertson, sailing with Sarah Ayton and Inga Leask finished in second place with team mates Lizzie Edwards sailing with her sister Caroline and Sarah Allen, in third place. Nicole Johnson/Jane Norris/Jo line finished seventeenth.

Monica Azon/Laia Tutzo/Sandra Azon of Spain are the newly crowned Yngling world champions finishing nine points in front Ulrike Schümann/Wibke Bülle/Winnie Lippert of Germany, with Betsy Alison/Lee Icyda/Suzy Leech of America in third place.

Robertson/Ayton/Leask finished in sixteenth place overall, with Edwards/Edwards/Allen 26th and Johnson/Norris/Line in 30th place.

Olympic Manager Stephen Park commented, “In this class things are still developing and we are bound to see a lot of changes between now and Athens. The results are a little disappointing from a British point of view as we hoped for better. That said the conditions have been very light, shifty and difficult all week but this has been the same for everyone.”

“No doubt the sailors will appraise their progress when they get back to Britain, and we can hope to see better results at the Olympic Test Event in Athens next month.”
