Enterprises at the Penarth Yacht Club Regatta

The 26 crews sailed in the Severnside Enterprise event at Penarth Regatta. The extremely varied conditions produced some interesting races and results. Race one was sailed in a Force 4 to 5 North Westerly with strong gusts. Keith and Ann Whitfield (PenarthYC) emerged as early leaders from Martyn Bromley and Claudia Haynes (PYC), both crews having claimed the pin end of the starting line. The Whitfields extended their lead and Jeff and Paul Dyer sailed strongly to claim second. Roy Barker and Minnie Lucey (PYC) capitalised on a mishap by Bromley and Haynes to seize third.
The second race started in a light wind, which fell during the start sequence and went through more than ninety degrees. Undaunted, Race Officer Simon Cook let the fleets go amid mayhem. Ron Dungey and Alison Culverwell (PYC) emerged from the pin end to claim the lead, which they held tenaciously to the finish. Russell Bright and his new crew pushed them all the way to the finish and Ian and Tony Wakeling (Bristol Corinthian YC) emerged from the pack to be the best of the rest.
Race three was the decider. The main contenders all fought for the port end of the line. The Whitfields and Bromley and Haynes opted to go left on the beat having seen darker water approaching from that direction. However, Phil Kirk and Alison Skeats (Frampton upon Severn SC) came from the centre of the course to lead at the windward mark. They then proceeded to make a complete hash of rounding it, leaving the Whitfields and Bromley/Haynes to sail to first and second respectively in both race and series.
