Comet Open Meeting at Naseby Sailing Club

Twelve Comets and one Mino (reduced rig Comet) enjoyed friendly competition at the Open Meeting held on 7th July at Naseby SC in Northants.

The morning race started in a gentle but dying breeze. Alan Bennett (Shustoke SC) overtook the early leaders George Parry (Naseby) and Peter Hayes (Winsford Flash) to win and Mark Coppenhall (Hunts) was 2nd.

After lunch and relaxation in warm sunshine it was back to the fray in a nice force 2. Paul Hinde (Naseby) showed early pace but faded to 5th, with Bennett again winning with Coppenhall 2nd and Brian Herring (Winsford Flash) 3rd.

A sudden increase in wind strength at the start of Race 3 caused some excitement but Bennett again won with Coppenhall overtaking Hayes and Phillip Hossell (Severn) to come 2nd.

Slow motion "nip and tuck" racing The forecast was for very light winds turning from the north to the south with bright conditions. When I arrived at the club, there was near zero wind in places on the reservoir. I wasn't too worried as we had over three hours until racing. A good sailing day after a dire forecast! Shustoke Sailing club hosted its first ever Comet Open on Sunday 16th July. There was some doubt, in the days leading up to the event, whether or not the meeting would take place due to the forecast of high winds and thunderstorms. Light steady winds for the 15 sailors Fifteen Comet sailors arrived at Burghfield Sailing Club for the Comet Open on Saturday 22nd April to find a becalmed reservoir with mist on the water. Race Officer James Anderson postponed the start until after an early lunch. Posted on 23 Apr 2023
