Cadet Open Meeting at Bough Beech Sailing Club

What a glorious day for Bough Beech’s first Cadet open. Sunshine and breeze! Fifteen Cadets from four Clubs competed in this new event in the Cadet Class Calendar. Racing on the traditional Triangle and sausage course the sailors were tested by the shifty and gusty conditions, with spotting the gusts proving more important than local knowledge.

The first race sailed in the windiest conditions quickly developed into a duel between local sailors Lawrence Cavill and William Mayes against visitors the Moss brothers Richard and Chris from Fishers Green. Covering well and with excellent boatspeed the honours finally went to Richard and Chris.

After the lunch break, the Race officer ran a short practice race followed by two races back to back. In Race 2 the morning leaders failed to notice the breakaway to the right by local sailors Bess Mayhew and Sarah Murphy and Miki Lutyens and Sabrina Rodriguez. The girls took an impressive lead for the first lap, but slowly their more experienced opponents reeled them in to give first place to Richard and Chris with Jonathan Moss and Sophie Dingwall gaining second, followed by Miki and Sabina.

With two wins Richard and Chris had the event in the bag as they entered the third race, and things looked pretty sorted for Jonathan and Sophie. The race now was for third place and it would not be easy. Again Miki and Sabrina looked to have everything under control, until a big header at the windward mark forced a tack and duck Lawrence and Will now ahead sailed a textbook race covering relentlessly to the finish.

Huge support from Bough Beech Cadet parents and senior pupils from Sevenoaks School produced a great event. For a Squadron under a year old, the results and the racing were very pleasing, and everyone was delighted that others had travelled from other Clubs to share this wonderful day.
