FRESH HERRING WINS WEATHER SHORTENED SECOND ROUND OF CONTESSA INSHORE SERIES
John Corden and Anne Merryweather’s Fresh Herring continued her winning ways in the second round of the Contessa 32’s Inshore Series hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club at Yarmouth over the weekend of 25/26 May.
Rouse/Vanner/Richards’ Blanco and John McCann’s Cosantes were second and third respectively, reversing their finishing order from the first weekend, in a largely weather effected series which saw only one race out of three sailed.
Winds of 25knots gusting 35 knots on Saturday, together with a lumpy sea from wind over tide and severe showers made for cold and difficult conditions. Several boats from the Eastern Solent did not arrive.
Blanco suffered a blown No 2 spinnaker, lost her Genoa sheets at one stage and took a 720 penalty turn but still managed to get second. Cosantes was leading at one stage but went for the wrong mark allowing Fresh Herring to take the lead, which she held to the finish.
Completion of one race in the typical ‘Contessa’ conditions was thanks to good race management by the Royal Solent, but the second Saturday race and Sunday had to be abandoned.
The Contessa 32s are next in action at the Royal Southern for a weekend of two boat team racing on June 8/9.
