Topaz Open Meeting at Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club

Leigh on Sea Sc hosted a joint Topper and Topaz weekend on 11th and 12th May. The Saturday races for the Toppers counted towards the Topper Eastern Area Travellers Trophy and are reported separately.

In the Topaz class 9 boats started in at least one of the 4 races, with the many different rigs allowed in the class the racing was on a handicap basis using a mixture of locally adjusted PNs and manufacturer’s recommendations. Richard Tomkys, sailing with a Uno Plus rig and crew, and Steve Tubby with a Race Plus rig and crew, were either first or second in all but one of the races. James Cheshire with a standard Uno single handed configuration scored two thirds on Saturday and two seconds on Sunday. The overall result was a tie on points between Tomkys and Tubby with Tomkys taking the Topaz plate by virtue of beating Tubby in the last race, as both discarded third places.
