Forty-nine Dart 18s travelled to Snettisham Beach Sailing Club for Grand prix No. 3 on 4&5th May 2002. As this was the last open meeting before the national Championships a strong fleet had gathered including five former national champions, 3 former European champions plus a former world champion.

The first race got away in perfect conditions, a F3-4 and sunshine, a sausage triangle sausage course. Chris Moore and Cathryn Farthing lead initially followed by Dave and Louise Roberts. At this point there was confusion among the fleet with half of the fleet sailing a triangle first and the other half, the sausage first. However, Alan and Fiona Kernick sailed fast down the run to pressure the two leaders and eventually found their way to the front to win from Moore/Farthing with Roberts third.

Race 2 was started immediately by the slick race team in similar conditions on the same course. Dan Norman and Sally Atkinson sailed well, up the middle of the first beat but it was Richard and pat Triffit who led at the windward mark having taken the offshore route up the beat. The Triffits lead on the run under pressure from Norman/Atkinson and Gareth Owen and Amanda Gadsby who made ground. On the next beat the Triffits fell back and Jasper and Laura barnham moved into 3rd place. Final positions were Norman/Atkinson, Owen/Gadsby and the Barnhams.

After a general recall race 3 got underway in slightly more wind on a bigger course. Bob Fletcher and Ian Clayton stormed up the first beat and sailed away into the distance leaving the rest to fight for the minor places. The next group comprised of David and Sam Lloyd, Owen/Gadsby, Norman/Atkinson, Herve le Maux and Joanna Jones-Pierce and the Barnhams, who all enjoyed a particularly close race. The Barnhams pulled through into second place followed by Lloyds, Owen/Gadsby and Norman/Atkinson.

The fleet then made a dash for the beach as the water receded and for many it was a struggle through the mud to get ashore. Saturday evening featured a Caribbean meal prepared by Jean-Ann Bartlett and friends and live music late into the night.

With the points extremely close, the fleet looked forward to Sunday's racing. However we awoke to find the wash covered in white horses and with the wind recording at a steady 30 knots, racing was abandoned. This meant that after 3 races with one discard the Barnhams were the winners followed by Fletcher/Clayton and Norman/Atkinson.

Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week. The Dolphins and Cornish Shrimpers tend to sail round-the-harbour courses anyway - none of this triangle/sausage business for them. Posted on 29 Aug 2024

Blow the wind Southerly (sometimes with a bit of East in it too) Poole Harbour was very much a harbour of two halves on the Tuesday of Poole Week.
