Queen to view tall ship Prince William in Falmouth

by Patricia Juarez 24 Apr 2002 18:00 BST

Her Majesty The Queen will be introduced to Captain Barbara Campbell of the Sail Training Association's Tall Ship 'Prince William', the first and only sailing vessel named for her grandson, during her Golden Jubilee Tour in Falmouth on Wednesday, 1st May 2002 at 1050am on the Prince of Wales Pier.

The Sail Training Association is the UK's foremost maritime youth organisation and has been taking young people, aged 16-24, to sea since the 1960s. A sport that is close to all of the royal generations, sailing offers a unique opportunity for young people to develop lifelong skills such as communication and teamwork while meeting others from a variety of different backgrounds. The STA is one of only a few sail training organisations whose work with young people is officially recognised by the Department for Education and Skills (DFES).

During the Royal Visit, the Queen will embark on a tour of Falmouth Harbour in which she will view 'Prince William', the STA's one year-old, 200ft square-rigged Tall Ship, for the first time since its naming announcement in London last year. During her harbour tour, The Queen will be greeted by young crewmembers including Tom Bird (Falmouth), Rachel Inglis (Helston) and Luke Marks (Penzance) who will be manning the yards 120 feet above deck as she passes. The Queen will be introduced to Captain Barbara Campbell, the only female Captain of a Tall Ship in the world following her tour of the Harbour.

In addition to the harbour tour, the Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will also view three other Falmouth maritime bodies, including the new National Maritime Museum Cornwall, HMS Cornwall and the RNLI.
