Junior/Youth Open at Hollowell Sailing Club

by Ian Hall 24 Apr 2002 16:22 BST

This event was the first of the 2002 Anglian Water Junior Series.

A southerly force 2 greeted the 31 sailors who ranged in ability from juniors sailing in their first Open meeting to local National Radial Squad sailor Steven Hall. Particularly pleasing was the fleet of 5 Optimists, the most seen at Hollowell for some time.

The wind freshened during the day to gusts of Force 4, testing some of the younger helms, and keeeping the safety boats busy.

The first race was notable for most of the Topper fleet rounding the leward mark incorrectly, and hence losing potentially good positions.

As expected Steven Hall dominated the Radial fleet, but was beaten on handicap in the last race by up and coming Topper sailor Tim Hartley.

The generous prizes of Pinnell and Bax vouchers were thanks to the support of local Volvo dealer - Bells Motor Group, who have supported this event for the last three years.
