Milton Keynes Cup at Milton Keynes Sailing Club

by Brian Goodyear 24 Apr 2002 12:34 BST

20/21 April 2002

Milton Keynes SC hosted the Milton Keynes Cup over the weekend of 20/21 April, the Juniors (under 19) on Saturday and the Seniors on Sunday. Four clubs: Milton Keynes SC, Emberton Park SC, Haversham SC and Great Moor SC each provided teams of 6 boats, 3 single-handed and three crewed boats being the format for the seniors.

The Junior event was held in bright, warm sunshine but light winds between force 1 and 3. For the Juniors, three races were sailed and all three were to count. A wide range of boats were sailed, including a Cadet, Lasers with Standard and Radial rigs, a 29er and Toppers. The racing was very tight and often tactical. The outstanding individual was Bobby Foster (Great Moor) who took three straight wins but the overall team result was extremely close with only three points separating the top two teams, Haversham narrowly beating Great Moor.

For the Seniors on Sunday the weather was even warmer but fortunately with slightly stronger winds of 2 to 4. The format was two races from three to count. Again there was a wide range of craft racing: Wayfarer, Kestrel, Buzz, RS600, RS400, RS200, Scorpions, Graduate, Enterprise, Phantom, Laser Standard and Radial rigs and Solo. The racing was very competitive but well-behaved and all incidents were dealt with on the water. After the first race Milton Keynes had taken a commanding lead but in the second the Milton Keynes Graduate was over the line and two of their boats sailed the incorrect course bringing the other teams back into contention. Any team could have taken the trophy and it all hinged on the final race. Like the Juniors the previous day, the overall result was very close with only 1 point separating the top two teams. This time Great Moor were to win by the closest of margins from Milton Keynes. The winning individual boat was the Buzz of Andrew Curtis and Chris Morrissey (Milton Keynes) posting a first and second.
