Enterprise World Championships in Bogmalo, Goa Overall

by Bob Southworth 13 Apr 2002 07:44 BST

Richard Estaugh & Pete Rowley clinched an impressive victory in the Enterprise World Championship by winning Race 9, then coming in to shore to pack their boat away in the secure knowledge that no-one could improve on their total of 23 points in the last race.

Farokh Tarapore & Pushpendra Garg won the last race after coming second in Race 9, leaving these previous winners of the World championship in seventh place overall with 43 points.

Shane McCarthy & Simon Cook were second, completing a remarkably consistent series, counting 8 results, none worse than fifth, leaving them with a total of 28 points in second place overall.

Third was Jeremy Stephens & Andy Poole, leaving the duo from Cornwall as the happiest men on the beach with their best place of the week.

Fourth was another solid performance from Naresh Yadav & Girdharilal Yadav, bringing their total points to 35 and their final placing to third overall.

Irish Team Report by Martin Cuppage:

After an extremely competitive 5 days, these championships have concluded with a significant Irish success; Shane McCarthy and Simon Cook have finished 2nd overall to give the best result for an Irish crew ever in a World Championships in the Enterprise class!

The last day 2 days Thursday and Friday saw lighter winds than earlier in the week although Thursday started with a fresher breeze than normal almost immediately dying to a reasonably steady 6 knots from the west. This suited Shane and Simon well who have been going very consistently all week and particularly in the lighter breezes. The most consistent team of the week were the eventual winners Richard Estaugh and Pete Rowley who almost put themselves into an unassailable lead by the end of Thursday having added a 2nd and 7th. They showed their world class status by winning the first race on Friday by a reasonable margin confirming their championship at that point and not having to sail the last race. Shane and Simon had had a good day on Thursday with a 3rd and 4th and confirmed their second overall with more consistency on Friday notching a further 4th and finally a 2nd. This culminated an excellent performance where Shane/Simon counted 8 results in the top 5 discarding a 15th and an 8th.

The rest of the Irish team found the lighter winds and persistent short chop difficult and added to the intense heat, concentration was lacking. Moreover a certain amount of bad luck dogged all teams with illness, particularly Stephen O'Driscoll who didn't sail as a result on the last day and also Tim Redmond/Heather King who despite sailing with illness, had to count an unlucky disqualification in Race 8 due effectively to a "graphical" error. However despite all the difficulties, this experience for all the Irish team will remain unforgettable and should encourage all to redouble efforts for future Worlds in tropical climes!
