Cadet World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina - Day 5

by Roger Wilson 5 Jan 2002 11:19 GMT

GBR boats do better in the medium winds but Fernando Gwozdz, who has previously come 2nd in the Oppie Worlds and 6th this year in the 420 worlds is an awesome sailor who showed that he is master of all conditions.

Race 9 started in a slightly shifty 10-15 knot wind and the usual severe short chop. 3 boats were OCS including GBR 8519 Gray/Dallimore who was called over at the pin end.

Gwozdz/Mare got to the windward mark first and sailed a perfect race to win by 200m. There was a tight battle between 4 boats at the end of the final beat for 2nd place. ARG 8064 eventually got on the right side of a starboard shift to just cross BEL 8518, with GBG 8846 Hughes/Graves coming in fourth and GBR 9000 Wilson/Hatfield coming fifth. Next GBR boat was 8528 Iain Watson & Ed Thomas at 9th who had been right up with the leaders until they hit a mark.

For Race 10 the wind had steadied to 16 knots and a large thunderstorm travelled down the right hand side of the beat. Gwozdz/Mare again rounded first, GBR 9000 was 2nd but hit the mark forcing a 360, knocking her down to 5th with Watson/Thomas 6th. The GBR boats blasted down the reaches and were 2nd/3rd by the leeward mark. The course was shorted at the next windward mark and they held their positions. Hughes/Graves sailed a soild race to finish 7th and GBR 8997 Laura Wade & Jenny Sudell, who had had to retire in the previuos race as their halliard broke, came 10th. GBR 9038 Julia Cornah & Oren Richard finishes 13th.

Cadet World Championship day 3
Being surrounded by hills and mountains has the inevitable effect So far the conditions on Lake Lipno have provided for excellent and challenging sailing, however being surrounded by hills and mountains can mean that the winds are shifty and can be light at time, and this proved to be the case on day 3.
