Cadet World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina - Day 4

by Barry Lambert 4 Jan 2002 10:20 GMT

Day 4 brings mixed fortunes to the GBR team

The highlight of the week so far was the stunning performance by Pippa Wilson and Charlie Hatfield, and consistent sailing by Laura Wade and Jenny Sudell.

RACE 7

For the first time, the British and the Australians dominated the race from the start.

The start was brought forward by one hour in order to try to get an extra race in. After the usual delay on the water Race 7 started in the light conditions we are beginning to get used to.

Pippa Wilson and Charlie Hatfield GBR 9000 got off to an excellent start and with clear air was able to tack up the centre of the course to round the first mark alongside Shane Hughes AUS 9282. Laura Wade and Jenny Suddel GBR 8997 were clear of the following boats in third place.

Pippa showed us all that she is getting to grips with the very difficult conditions buy eventually pulling away and finishing first with a comfortable margin.

Laura Wade held here third position giving us 2 boats in the first three which we all hope will be the pattern from now on.

Other British boats sailed well and the whole team was greatly boosted by the way their team members began to break the early dominance of the Argentinians.

We still saw some of the Argentinians put in a world class performance gaining massively on all legs of the course but the early lead taken by the first three boats could not be broken.

RACE 8

After a break for lunch, conditions remained light, but the next race got underway with a minimum of delay.

Pippa Wilson again showed her increasing confidence by reaching the first mark in second place with a Argentinian either side of her.

After the leeward mark we were suprised to see that the two Argentinians did not split the course, which is something we have become accustomed to.

Laura Wade BGR 8997 was again the second British boat initially lying 11th, with other british boats in the teens.

Laura was able to consolidate this position and through consistant sailing finished an excellent 9th place making her 14th overall.

Pippa Wilson finished 3rd making her the first non Argentinian boat in 7th position after 1 discard.

James Hughes and Anna Graves GBR 8846 are now lying 12th overall.
