Laser Stratos Family Weekend at Queen Mary Sailing Club

by Sophie Jezierski 18 Oct 2001 17:26 BST

September 29th/30th saw the first ever Laser Stratos National Family weekend, hosted by Queen Mary SC, Middlesex. An impressive 15 boats took to the water for a weekend which combined training, racing and fun for the crews of mixed ages and levels of ability.

Saturday was dedicated to a comprehensive training programme which included asymmetric spinnaker rigging, launching and racing. On-the-water action was captured on video for on-shore analysis and further individual advice and the stimulating day was rounded off with a family BBQ in the clubhouse.

Wind which reached force 5 during Sunday provided some with an interesting experience for their first ever race; others savoured their first opportunity to race against other Laser Stratos. Testing conditions led to several capsizes and one or two course variations but Jon and Juliet Sallis, racing with their sons, enjoyed a clear victory. Not far behind, the Rivers family (Doug, Christine, Chris and Michael) secured 2nd place with Jim Thomas and Trevor Brown finishing 3rd.

A warm welcome was provided by Queen Mary SC with trusted expertise aimed at various levels of experience. The Laser Centre contributed to the superb hospitality and hosted the initial meeting focused on the formation of the Laser Stratos Class Association.
