Javelin Open Meeting at Stone Sailing Club

by David Houghton 26 Sep 2001 15:51 BST

22nd & 23rd September

Light winds and occasional sunshine persisted for the first days sailing at the Javelin Open Meeting at Stone S.C.

Race one saw David Houghton/John Symonds off to a good start ahead of Richard Smith/Ian Winterburn. By the first mark Houghton/Symonds had opened up a good lead which they gradually increased throughout the race to take line honours. Chris Skedge/Dick Fisher took second place for a short while thanks to some fickle winds but Smith/Winterburn managed to regain this spot by the finishing line.

The wind decreased slightly for the start of the next race. Paul Ross/Dave Wilkes, Smith/Winterburn and Ben Fisher/Ben Chapman were closely packed at the first mark and had a good lead on the rest of the pack. Ross/Wilkes went on to take first closely persued by Smith/Winterburn.

Sunday's racing started under very overcast skies and force four - five winds. Houghton/ Symonds got off to a good start and had a small lead on the rest of the pack by the first mark, which they held to the finishing line. Ross/Wilkes and Smith/Winterburn battled for the next two places with Ross/Wilkes looking good for second until being caught out by a gust and capsizing on the last leg allowing Smith/Winterburn into second.

Race four saw Ross/Wilkes push out Smith/Winterburn at the line. By the first mark Houghton/Symonds and Ross/Wilkes were side by side. These two battled it out for most of the race with Ross/Wilkes crossing the line first.

The fifth and final race saw Ross/Wilkes off to a perfect start and quickly opened a good lead to easily take first place. Skedge/Fisher battled to take a well-earned second.

Following 2 days of well run and closely fought racing one point separated the first two boats with Ross/Wilkes taking overall honours and also the John Wade Trophy for Saturdays sailing.
