Cadet Open Meeting at Datchet Water Sailing Club

by Ray Youlden 3 Sep 2001 16:07 BST

Datchet's annual combined Cadet and Optimist open was generously sponsored by Cadbury Schweppes and was a selection event for the RYA South East Zone for both classes. The event was held on Saturday 1st September and a total of 56 boats entered with the majority of entrants racing in the Optimist main fleet.

The Cadets were the first class to start and it did not take long for Victoria Cooper and Phillipa Horne, who were last years winners, to stamp their authority on the Cadet fleet. By the first mark they had a narrow lead over Aaron Cooper and Jenny Lennon that they then extended by skilled spinnaker work down the opening two reaches of the course. Another all girl team of Elizabeth Tickle and Elizabeth Williams rounded close behind hoping to gain should either of the first two boats have made a mistake. This set the pattern for the remainder of this and the other three races in the series with Victoria and Phillipa taking first place, Aaron and Jenny second and the two Elizabeths third in all four races. Fourth place overall was taken by Peter Adams and Hannah Tickle who fought hard but could not quite get on terms with the leading boats.
