Etchells Worlds at Royal Lymington Yacht Club Overall

by Editor 2 Sep 2001 10:54 BST

Stuart Childerley is the new Etchells World Champion after the 6th race held in Christchurch Bay from the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

AUSTRALIANS FINISH SECOND IN ETCHELLS WORLDS - Report from Peter Campbell

Despite winning the sixth and final race, Australians Cameron Miles, Phil Smidmore and James Mayjor have had to be content with second overall in the 2001 International Etchells World Championship sailed out of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club on the English south coast.

The title went to the British champion Stuart Childerley who, after discarding his worst race, needed only to finish among the top 13 placegetters. He finished sixth and ended up seven points clear of the Australians.

Nevertheless, it was a great effort by Miles, the 1999 World champion from Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

Knowing he had to win the last race to have any chance of taking out the 2001 World title, Miles fought out a close race overnight with Melbourne yachtsman Grant Wharington, who finished second at the helm of Satu to place seventh overall.

Sailing Pacesetter, an Etchells built by his crewman Phil Smidmore, Miles notched up an excellent scorecard of 7-6-16-9-14-1 for a net total of 37 points to Childerley’s 2-1-20-62-1-6 for 30 points. The British sailor’s discard of 62 points came from an OCS (premature start).

Third overall went to the Danish double Olympic gold medallist P R Hoj-Jensen, sailing Danish Blue, with 41 points from placings of 8-14-12-20-3-4.

The World championship attracted a star-studded fleet of 61 boats, including one-time America’s Cup opponent John Bertrand from Australia and American Dennis Conner.

Bertrand finished 11th overall after an OCS (premature start) in the final race, with Conner, a two times Etchells World champion, ended up 21st overall, his best place being a second.

Overall Results: (six races, 1 discard)
