Scottish Mirror Championships at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club

by John Robertson 29 Jul 2001 22:53 BST

Dalgety Bay SC played host to the Scottish Mirror Championships over the long weekend of 27th – 29th July. On the Friday, three races were held for the Scottish Junior and Youth Championship for helms under 16 and under 20 respectively. An inshore course was set to stay out of the stronger offshore tide, and a small but competitive fleet got under way in a light wind which was only just sufficient to allow the boats to race. Ben and Hannah Robertson of the home club had a short period of glory while leading the first race, but faded towards the end allowing Matthew Wishart / James Jamieson and Harry Wishart / Dorothy Tait, both from the Shetland Sailing Centre to take first and second places. In the second race in a strengthening wind, Harry Wishart / Dorothy Tait pulled to the front, followed by Fraser Hall / Ivor Johnson also from the Shetland Sailing Centre. The deciding race proved to be a close tussle between the 3 Shetland boats, with Fraser Hall / Ivor Johnson eventually taking the win, and Harry Wishart / Dorothy Tait second. With one discard, the tie break rules gave both the Junior Championship and the Youth Championship to Hall and Johnson.

Six races were held over the weekend for the Scottish Area Championships, and the boats from the Shetland Sailing Centre dominated the proceedings again. After some very close racing, the overnight leaders were Harry Wishart / Dorothy Tait, just in front of Matthew Wishart / James Jamieson. On the Sunday, the wind blew strongly leading to a few capsizes and gear failures, however Matthew Wishart / James Jamieson clearly enjoyed the conditions, and took all three races by clear margins, which together with their results from the Saturday, gave them the Scottish Championship. Fraser Hall / Ivor Johnson, took two second places despite their relatively light weights, but this was not enough to overtake Harry Wishart / Dorothy Tait, who held on to second place overall. The only person to interfere with the Shetland domination was Ernie Turpie from Annandale, crewed by Cheryl Stobbart, who went away with the Masters Trophy. The Team trophy went to – yes you guessed – Shetland Sailing Centre.
