Mumbles Long Distance Cat Race at Mumbles Yacht Club

by Colin Jenkins 4 Jul 2001 09:18 BST

As MYC's first attempt at a long distance cat race, the cautious decision was made to sail large laps around the bay rather than sail off down the Gower coast; which, because of the success of the event, we're likely to do next year. Perfect sailing conditions, force 4-5 and sunshine, ensured that everybody had a ball on the water regardless of how well they did in the race.

The three Tresaith visitors sailed off into the distance in their Hurricanes leaving the home fleet, dominated by Dart18s, to their own race over the water. Unfortunately the two home boats (iF20s) that would have given the 5.9s a race over the water had to retire with gear failure; including a dislocated knee!

Line honours went to Hurricane 5.9 086 sailed by Liz Howell & Steve Williams from Tresaith, with Colin Jenkins & Jo Mullett in Dart 18 4784 taking first place on handicap.

Along with the regular volunteers from Mumbles Yacht Club, special thanks must go to Chris Coode for organising the event and Swansea Sub-Aqua & Yacht club for providing mark yachts and other safety craft. To quote Chris, "it was a hoot"!
